Shopify Checkout Extensibility Validation Rules

When you sell virtual services (such as Shipping Protection, Rush Processing, or Extended Warranties), those items exist as products inside your Shopify product catalog.

Occasionally, tech-savvy shoppers or automated search crawlers may discover the direct URL of an extra service (e.g. yourstore.com/products/shipping-protection) and attempt to purchase the $1.98 protection item by itself with no physical merchandise in the cart.

Supercart leverages Shopify Checkout Extensibility and native Shopify Functions to enforce strict validation rules directly at checkout, blocking standalone service purchases completely.

Universal Compatibility (All Shopify Plans): Unlike legacy checkout scripts that historically required Shopify Plus, Supercart Checkout Validation rules are built on modern Shopify Functions. This means checkout validations work natively on all Shopify stores — including Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus plans.

1. How Checkout Validation Rules Work

Shopify Functions execute natively within Shopify’s global infrastructure with zero latency:

2. Enabling Checkout Validation in Shopify Admin

Enabling the Supercart validation rule takes less than two minutes:

Step 1: Open Checkout Settings in Shopify Admin

1. Inside your Shopify Admin, navigate to Settings (bottom left gear icon).
2. Click the Checkout tab.
3. Scroll down to the Checkout Rules section.

Step 2: Add the Supercart Validation Rule

1. Click Add Rule.
2. Select Supercart Extra Services Validation from the list of installed validation apps.

Step 3: Activate and Save

1. Set the rule status to Turn on.
2. Click Save.

The rule is now active across all checkout channels (including Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and standard credit card checkout).
